Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Psalms 119:11
Today I want to take a look at abiding.
What does it mean to abide? How do we do that? Can we take this Word of God, and hide it within ourselves? Let it abide within us so that it becomes more critical to our existence than water, air or blood.
Let’s go to John 15, and see what Jesus Christ taught us about abiding.
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. John 15:1-3
We see how that Christ Jesus is The Word. He is also the True Vine. John outlines at the beginning of his gospel that Jesus Christ is the Word of God, Manifest in the Flesh. This is the Word that the Psalmist hid in his heart. The Word of God. We see Christ affirm this by the previous verse. “Ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. John 15:4-5
Of ourselves there is no good thing. We would not want God’s word to abide in us. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Our faith is on Christ “Without me ye can do nothing.”
If we abide in him, and he abide in us, we will bear fruit. We begin to love his law, his commands, his righteousness. We begin to despise the carnal and lustful things we once loved.
When the power of God comes upon a man, can they the next moment take up sinning? No, they bear fruit. When they abide… We as branches can become withered. We begin to disconnect from the life giving Vine. Choked by the cares of life, and the lust of other things, since we are unfruitful we are removed, and cast into hell…
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. John 15:6
These are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.
And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. Mark 4:14-19
To abide with Christ is critical. He is the vine, you will bear no fruit of yourself. Do not be decieved, if you are abiding in Christ, his Words are abiding in you. You can not, live in sin, or break his commands. If you are abiding in him, he has written his laws on your heart. As Ezekiel prophecied of the sprinkling of water to cleanse us from all our filthiness. Jesus said “ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.”
Study his word to see if you are abiding. If you find that you are not, call out to him. Seek True Faith.
I would like to offer myself as a resource. If you are seeking, I am happy to visit with you about my
Savior, and what he has done for me. And, what he can do for you! Seek the Lord with all your heart. Hold nothing back. Take him at his word.
God Bless
I love the way you made it very easy to understand, thank you for sharing with me
Thank you Terry. I will be praying that God will continue to manifest himself to you, me, and others that seek him dilligently. There is a lot of false doctrine in the land. Praise God for the beauty and truth of his Word:)
